Rose O'Neal Greenhow was a famous Confederate Spy. In July of 1861 she sent information about the movements of General Irvin McDowell's towards Virginia. She was later captured by Allan Pinkerton and confined to her home. Somehow, she still managed to send messages from there and from the prison she was sent to. She was rewarded by the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, and later drowned during the sinking of a small boat.
Pauline Cushman was a Union Spy. She identified Confederate spies and gathered information about enemy operations until she was arrested by the Confederacy. She was sentenced to hang but was saved when Union forces arrived. Cushman became the "Darling of the South". She died of an overdose at the age of 60.
